The Fruit-Doves are the real tropical birds in this family. They have incredibly exotic colours and patterns and are a real treat to see. Unfortunately, they are usually quiet as they sit at the top of the fruiting trees they inhabit.
The Wompoo Fruit-Dove is so named because of its call, a distinctive and deep wom-poo sound. They are heard usually before being seen as despite their glamourous colours, they are usually sitting in dense rainforest. These large doves have a very long tail and are shades of green on the back but yellow, green and deep purple on the front. The grey head is set with a bright red eye and red and yellow bill. These remarkable birds are found in rainforests in the east coast.
The Superb Fruit-Dove is about half the size of the Wompoo and is harder to find with a quiet, typical dove call. It also inhabits rainforest areas but is even more restricted to eastern coastal areas. Its plumage is astonishing, a real paintbox of colours, topped with a purple crown. Despite this, it is hard to find and most people (me included) see them only by chance.
While the Superb Fruit-Dove is all blocks of bold colours, the Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove is a vision of pastels. Even the grey breast is stunning with a volumous feathering I have never seen before. It is also small, rainforest dwelling and found in eastern coastal areas.
And still to find ...
