The Bell Miner is such an interesting bird. It has olive green plumage with yellow and black markings around the face. The bill and legs are orange, becoming brighter during the breeding season. It is found in large colonies in dense forests along the south eastern coast. There it can be heard calling with a high pitched bell like note. It is quite remarkable when you find them.
The Noisy Miner is a loud and gregarious honeyeater that is common across a wide area of eastern Australia. They congregate in large groups and are aggressively territorial.
The Yellow-throated Miner is the most widespread of the family, being found across most of mainland Australia, except for the east coast. It lacks the black brow of the Noisy Miner and has yellow on the shoulders.
There is a fourth species of Miner - the Black-eared. It is only found in a small area on the borders of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. It is similar to both the Yellow-throated and Noisy. While it is listed as Endangered, sightings are extremely rare and it is thought it could be extinct or hybridized with the other Miners.
