These parrots all have a similar physiology and a range of plumages, mainly red and green. I started out grouping them as a sort of miscellanous affair but I think they go together quite well.
The Eclectus Parrot is only found in a small area of Cape York, Far North Queensland. It is unusual in that both sexes are brilliantly and differently coloured. The female (on right) is vivid scarlet and royal blue with a black bill and the male is bright emerald with an orange bill. He has flashy red uner the wings, visible only in flight.
The male Australian King Parrot is a striking red on the body and dark green wings. The female has a paler green head but still carries the scarlet on the bottom of her body. They are found in south eastern areas with a small population of sub-species (minor) on the coast of north eastern Queensland.
Possibly my favourite parrot, the Red-winged Parrot is found across a wide area of dry and tropical Australia in the north east and northern areas. The female (on left) is predominately pale green with some red patches on her wing. The male (on the right) is more vivid with large red blocking on the wing.
The Princess Parrot is one of the most beautiful and sought after parrots but is only found in very dry areas of south western Northern Territory and eastern Western Australia.
Their plumage is a myriad of pastels with pale pinks, greens and blues on the body and a very long tail with flashes of bright pink.
The Superb Parrot is easily identified with a bright yellow face ringed with a deep red on the breast. It too has a long, graduated tail. It is only found across a stretch of inland NSW including small areas of Victoria and Queensland.
I can never decide if the Regent Parrot is yellow or green. The guide books state that the female is more yellow and the male more green. They both have beautiful long tails. There are 2 sub-species, one in the south western corner of Western Australia and another on the south coast border of South Australia and Victoria.
This interesting parrot is only found in a small area around and south of Perth. I think it is probably the most striking on the list and I always love seeing them. The Red-capped Parrot male is a stunning range of deep blue, bright red and dazzling yellow, all topped off with a long, feathered tail of blue with paler tips. The female is more blended and muted.
And still to find ...
