Visited: late dry season
Recommendation: The lookout walk is an easy climb over smooth(ish) rocks to a wonderful view across Kakadu National Park. It is worth visiting just for that. If you are lucky, you may also see some endemic species as well.
The lookout is close to one end of the Anbangbang Billabong and I visited specifically to look for 2 endemics. The first was the Chestnut-quilled Rock-Pigeon. I was pretty doubtful that I would find it - birding is never that easy. Only a few minutes into the climb and you come across a small vertical set of rocks and I saw movement. Quite amazingly, it was one of the pigeons. I moved around the back and climbed onto the top and spent a glorious half house watching and photographing 2 of these birds.
On the way down, I was more hopeful that I would see the other endemic - the Sandstone Shrikethrush. This is the perfect environment for them but again I was doubtful. Until I heard a familiar warble. And there it was. This beautiful bird is only found in these kind of areas in the Top End of Australia. What a privilige to see one.
