Visited: late dry season
Recommendation: The area around the centre of Broome is wonderful to explore. There is much more wildlife to see than you would think. It is a very pleasant place to wander.
I spent some time exploring the area on the eastern side of the peninsula, around the Town Beach area. There are various walks and lookouts over the mangroves and towards the ocean. When I was there, the tide was in and the shorebirds present were sitting up on any available branch or on the remaining small patches of beach.
I found one such place at Catalina Place where an interesting group of shorebirds were resting.
Grey-tailed Tattler (Heteroscelus brevipes)
Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres)
Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva)
Great Knot (Calidris tenuirostris)
Australian Tern (Gelochelidon macrotarsa
I walked along to the Roebuck Bay Lookout and amazingly found more activity on the paths around the area than looking into the mangroves. There were dragons wandering around and with amazement, I watched a car stop to allow a coucal to cross the road. It was heading to the shops - as you do! Also in the area were honeyeaters, butcherbirds and raptors. There was quite the variety of animals in this urban area. Time for a coffee!
Pheasant Coucal (Centropus phasianinus)
Horner's Dragon (Lophognathus horneri)
