There are 2 species of Catbird in Australia: the Spotted and the Green. They are most unusual and I can only assume that they are called Catbirds because of their awful yowling call. Like the Bowerbirds, you always know when these creatures are close by and I love that.
The Spotted Catbird can only be found in tropical rainforests in Far North Queensland. The range is from Cape Tribulation along the coast towards Townsville.
It is a very stocky bird with surprisingly bright green plumage. It has a very distinctive call and is more likely to be heard than seen.
The unique call can be heard below.
The Green Catbird is more uniformly green than the Spotted. This makes it even more cryptic.
The range of this Catbird is from north of Brisbane to south of Sydney and it is found in subtropical rainforests.
Another seriously weird call from the Green Catbird.
